COVID-19 Communications // Town of Banff
Print + Digital Design // 2020-21
With the
increase of restrictions and closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a large
portion of my time with the
Town of Banff’s Marketing and Communications
department in 2020 was spent working on signage and materials
relaying
important messages to the community of Banff, our many visitors, and our
internal staff. In mid-March of
2020, I had a request for two types of “Prevent
the Spread” posters. Days later, the Town of Banff entered a Local
State of
Emergency, and as a member of the Emergency Coordination Centre (ECC), my position
revolved around
quickly producing and adjusting messaging in coordination with
decisions made by our ECC, and the Federal and
Provincial governments.
The overall
design of our COVID-19 communications programming was quickly developed, as there was very little
time to spend on development of a unique sub-brand. I
kept design element similar to the look of Alberta Health
Service’s COIVD
documents, while pulling a colour scheme from ToB’s existing brand pallets. Over
the course of this
intensive communications period, over 100 icons
and illustrations specific to the COVID messaging campaign were
developed. Some icons were
created using heavy influence from available icons, and other were developed for
very
specific instances. I worked with presented copy, and also assisted in
copy-writing and ideation and development,
especially with the large scale
vinyl deals that were installed on Banff Avenue for the summer.
Deliverables
This
ongoing campaign included informational signage, indication of closures, labels
for public sanitizers, interior
and exterior floor decals – both informational
and distancing focused, ground stencils, way finding, postcards,
informational
documents, digital designs for social network and website, branding for both
the Emergency
Coordination Centre, and the Safety Ambassadors that were tasked
with handing out masks in the community,
to name a few elements. Hundreds of
pieces of unique signage and pieces were created, and many more distributed.
With frequently changing restrictions, there was also the added element of
ensuring the information our team was
relaying was accurate. This meant that
turn-around times were incredibly short, and many updates were needed to
existing
signage throughout the year – usually completed through the application of
vinyl stickers to reduce the
amount of re-printing needed.
Our small team
worked with Brookline Public Relations for support during the height of our
COVID-19 response,
mainly through the summer months of 2020. Along with
creating the majority of the design work required by the COVID
response, I
provided art direction and proofing to Brookline’s designer over the period
that additional support was needed.
Pieces from
this campaign were utilized by the Town of Canmore, Parks Canada, Roam Transit,
SkiBig 3, and many businesses
within the Towns of Banff and Canmore, and the village
of Lake Louise. The masking sign has been seen utilized in communities across Canada.
